FRANKSTON WOMEN’S CRICKET CLUB
Date started
1977/78
A Brief History
Frankston Women’s Cricket Club (FWCC) was founded in 1977/78, with two teams competing in the MPWCA (Mornington Peninsula Women’s Cricket Association).
In 1980/81 an A and a C Grade team were entered into the MPWCA, then after the MPWCA folded both teams played in the VWCA, for which both teams won the first of many Finals for The Tonners. Frankston Women’s Cricket Club has competed in all Grades of the VWCA at some stage during the history of the Club, including Pennant Grade (now known as District Firsts).
When the Club first started there was no Home Ground or Clubrooms; several Primary School ovals were used, including Fairway Primary, Karingal High and then Belvedere Primary. We were finally given our own Home Ground and Clubrooms at our former location at Belvedere Reserve, on East Road in Seaford. In the 2014/15 season, we had the clubrooms renamed after our founding Life Member, to the Diane Byrne Pavilion, at East Seaford Reserve, Brunel Road (off Austin Road) in Seaford.
In Season 2004/05 we fielded a District Seconds and B Grade team, however at one stage we had four teams. A number of players who started their cricket careers at FWCC have gone on to represent both Victoria and Australia.
Since the 2010/11 season, we have consistently fielded two open-aged teams in the One Day Shield and One Day South-East competitions,
and have won premierships in every season (except for 2012/13) since then. In season 2018/19 we continued our long run of success winning T20 and 40 Over finals in the Shield grade. The Tonners now have TWENTY TWO premierships in 42 years of history! A flag on average every 2 seasons is a wonderful achievement for a club in any sport.
In 2019/20,we are looking to continue the clubs success both on and off the field It's sure to be another big season at the Tonners, so come along and join us as we strive for even more success!
